Let’s Make it a Week

Workout: 4 miles

Time: 34:23

My goal this week?  Actually run more than once!  I remember those days…where I’d actually run more than once a week.  Ha!  Hopefully this week will restart that trend.  Today’s run was just to get out there and run.  It was kinda hot, and my legs were still heavy from the race on Saturday (more on that in a minute).  But, I got in what I wanted to get in.  And if I’m feeling very ambitious, I might even do the 200 sit-up challenge tonight!

belmar5So Saturday was the Belmar 5.  It was a race morning decision to try to run it for some speed…wasn’t sure what I wanted to do.  I had run like 3-4 times over the previous 3 weeks…but I still felt like trying it out.  Miles 1 and 2 were good…7:52 and 7:45.  Then, well, the heat kicked in…and man was it hot.  The last 3 miles got progressively slower, with the last mile clocking in at 8:58.  Finished 42 minutes flat.  I wanted to finish under 40, around the pace I wanted to do the half marathon in, but 42 ain’t that bad.  My girlfriend also finished a few minutes over the time she wanted to finish in, but her first mile was her fastest ever!  Oh!  And I beat Governor Corzine.  It was kinda interesting seeing him there with secret service and whatnot.

Sunday my girlfriend and I finally did some fundraising.  We did some supermarket begging as I like to call it.  4 hours, raised $150 dollars.  Not too bad.  We didn’t bring chairs, so we had to stand the whole time, but it went by pretty quickly.  We had a good time.  We met a guy who him and his mother just started a non profit called Operation Bling, who provide free jewelry to patients in the oncology wards at hospitals.  It’s a pretty sweet charity.  Check it out.

Lastly, I got the tickets printed for the baseball game, so buy some!!   And buy some 50/50′s!  Money raised goes to LLS!

Well, I think that’s it for now.  Hopefully tomorrow will bring another run!  Hope all you are running well!

Until tomorrow… Run on Friends!

Four in One

So…where’s Matt been?  I feel like I haven’t posted a blog in forever and a day and half.  I know you ALL were wondering…all 3 of you that read my blog.  Ha!  But in all seriousness, I’ve just been really tired this week and haven’t felt like blogging.

So what have I been up to?  Well…Tuesday I had physical therapy, and did not run.  I mean, they put me on an elliptical for 10 minutes…but that doesn’t really count for anything.  Then Wednesday, same thing…although I skipped the elliptical because I was 40 minutes late for my appointment…ooops!  But then Thursday came, glorious Thursday, and I went running with the girlfriend in Hoboken.  It was the first day of nice weather in I can’t remember how long.  As I sit here, it’s thundering and pouring outside…will the fun never stop?

So I’ve got to be honest, my heart hasn’t really been into fundraising lately.  I guess I’ve been too preoccupied with my own money issues to consider the fundraising.  I didn’t really think about it till I got a donation in the mail yesterday.  Which, by the way, was mailed the wrong address because in my infinite wisdom I put the wrong zip code on my fundraising letter.  Smart Matt, real smart.  So who knows, there could be a $1000 check floating around out there, and I’d never get it.

Well, that’s it for now.  I’m off to CT for the weekend for a wedding, so I don’t know if I’ll get a run in.  But I hope to get fully back on track on Monday.  So enjoy your weekend, and until next time…

Lack of Funds

Workout: About 3 miles

Pace: Moderate

Had to squeeze in a quick run after work today before I had some other things to do.  I decided to leave the Garmin at home…I know, I felt naked without it.  Actually, now that I think about it, I didn’t feel naked at all.  It’s nice to go untethered sometimes, to run just for the sake of running, not worrying about going too fast or too slow or what the distance is.  Just run till you don’t feel like running anymore, and run at whatever pace makes you feel good.  So that’s what I did.  And today was the first day all week that the sun was out, so it felt really good to be out there.  Looking forward to tomorrow’s long run with Team in Training and some friends…will be running by the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

My girlfriend and I got to talking about fundraising tonight, and how we’re both struggling a little with it.  I don’t know if it’s because the economy is bad, or people are just not interested in giving, but it has just seemed (or at least this time around) much tougher to get donations.  Today a potential sponsor told me they had their money committed elsewhere…very disappointing.  And if I can’t find a sponsor for the baseball game I’m going to have to cancel it.  Would be majorly disappointing.  So who wants to cheer me up and make a donation?

Well, that’s it for today.  Until next time…

Live from Hoboken

Workout: 3 miles easy

Location: Hoboken, NJ

So tonight I ran in Hoboken with my girlfriend.  We ran along the waterfront, giving us some great scenery of the New York City skyline.  Granted, it was cloudy and kinda murky out, so the view wasn’t THAT great, but it’s still a good ny_hoboken_viewview no matter what.  So yeah, we ran an easy 3 miles.  She mixes in walking with her running, so we ran the first mile straight through, then she mixed in walking over the next 1.5 miles while I just ran some circles around her so I could stay with her.  Then we finished the last 0.5 miles together.

Outside of that there’s really not too much to report.  I’ve recovered completely from my near pass-out experience of last night, although my leg was bothering me during the run tonight.  I think that might have more to do with the herniated disk and pinched nerve in my back than any thing else.  But, I start physical therapy for that next week so hopefully that’ll clear up.

On the fundraising front, I’ve had one more donation come in over the past week, so once my checks post I should be around $1100.   A great start, but I still have a long way to go.  I am waiting on a possible sponsorship for a fundraising event I’m having at the Somerset Patriots ballpark, so if that comes through that’ll be great.  If not, well, not sure what else I’ll be doing for fundraising.  Care to help out?  (click donate now to the right).

Well, that’s it for now friends.  Going to visit my dad tomorrow night since he’s home now from the hospital, so I probably won’t run or blog.  So until next time…

Go with the Flow

Workout: Run How You Feel

Distance: 4 miles

Time: 33:40

So I switched up my training schedule a little, since I took a few days off last week and needed a few easy days this week to make sure I didn’t hurt my leg again.  So today was a run how you feel, go with the flow kinda run.  And so I did just that.  Still had my Garmin on to yell at me for going to fast, since I wanted to take it somewhat easy, but I didn’t want to completely stuck going slow.  Surprisingly I actually ended up running negative splits.  It was a really good run.  Sun was hot, it was a little humid, great day for a run.  Leg hurt a little after the run, but after icing it it feels pretty good.

Tomorrow should be a day off, as I’m going to visit my girlfriend in her hometown.  So, I probably won’t run or blog.  Then my thought is I’ll come back Thursday with some speed work or a tempo run to really get things back in gear.  Gotta fit that in between a dentist appointment and a doctor’s appointment.  Hopefully I’ll have time.

Well, for now I’m out.  I’m separating 50/50 tickets to get ready to sell them for my fundraising.  If you live in Jersey and wanna buy some, respond to this post or email me at matt@mattruns4funds.com.  Until next time…
