Back from Vacation

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

And so I am finally back, and finally have a minute to sit down and write a little.  The site has changed a little…thanks to pictures from Katelyn Nesi Photography I was able to change the layout and look of the site.  Would love to hear comments on it!  So let me catch you up on everything I said I’d catch you up on:

Photo shoot and Manasquan Reservoir Run

The photo shoot went really well.  Katelyn was great and had some good ideas.  She was very professional, and very helpful.  If you ever need some photography work done, definitely give her a call!

It couldn’t have been a more beautiful day for it.  It’s pretty funny…I brought changes of clothes and “props”…but I think they helped to get some good pictures.  Some of my favorites are below.  I hope to have them all up shortly.

After the photo shoot I decided I might as well go running while I was there.  I haven’t run there since high school!  It actually turned out to be a really good run.  Did the full 5 mile loop in around 41 minutes.  It was really hot, but it was a lot of fun.  Felt great throughout the run, and was happy to get it in since I wasn’t sure about running with vacation coming up.

Camping / VA Runs

So we actually got some runs in while we were on vacation (my girlfriend and I).  Before we left for Virginia we got up and ran 5 miles.  After that we got ready, hopped in the car, and drove down to Luray, VA to set up camp.  We got a really great camping spot…pretty big with only one other site next to us, and it was in the shade.  While there, we went canoeing, tubing, and hiking.  On the day we went hiking, we also got up and ran 3 miles on this bike path in Luray.  It was scenic.  On Friday we visited the Luray caverns, then did get a short run at our hotel in Tyson’s Corner outside of DC.  Here’s some pictures from the trip:

Donating

Lastly today, I wanted to reach out to everyone who is thinking about maybe making a donation, but is thinking they don’t have the money to do so.  Please, every dollar counts!   Each dollar raised brings us one step closer to finding a cure for blood cancers!  So take a minute, click on the link on the right, and make a donation.  It will be GREATLY appreciated!

Double T Roundup

Day: Tuesday

Workout: 3 Miles

Day: Thursday

Workout: 3 Miles

Time: 24:03 (8:28, 8:10, 7:23)

Haven’t really had much to say about my runs this week, that’s why I haven’t blogged.  Tuesday I ran with my girlfriend.  It was the first time we ran out on the roads together.  She’s definitely getting better week to week.  Her running speed is increasing very well.  It was a pretty good run overall.

Tonight I decided to just run 3 again.  From the start my legs were tight.  I thought it was going to be a washed run, but, as you can see from my splits, it actually turned out to be a really good run.  I can’t remember the last time I ran negative splits like that.  It was finally not humid out, and relatively cooler than it’s been.  I did a nice loop with a fair amount of hills in it.  I really enjoyed it, and even the 7:23 final mile didn’t really feel hard.

On another note, I’ve decided to run Virginia Beach with my girlfriend, and am signing up for the ING Hartford 1/2 Marathon in October.  That way I can enjoy the run with my girlfriend, and still be able to run a PR this fall.  By running in October I should hopefully have some cooler weather, plus have several more weeks of training to get some speed work in.

Lastly, the baseball game has been rescheduled for August 24, so be on the lookout for the winning numbers.  You can buy tickets now!!  Contact me!

Weekend Wrapup & Trail Blazin II

Friday Workout: 2 miles at an ultra marathon pace

Saturday Workout: 9 miles, 8:45 pace

Today: over 5 miles, 42:14

So I got a little distracted this weekend, but finally got a chance to sit down and catch up on my blogging.

Friday I decided to see what a few miles at the pace I plan on running the ultramarathon at would feel.  And, just as I suspected, it felt pretty good.  I felt like I coulda just kept running and running.  My Garmin yelled at me a few times to slow down, but all in all I stayed at the pace I wanted to go, so it was a pretty good workout.

donateSaturday was the 7 am group run with Team in Training (I still need donations…please take a minute to donate now!).  We ran in Cranford through some of the parks there.  I’d say about 15 people showed up.  Turned out to be a good run.  Ran 6.5 of it with my friend Alex…we do a good job of pacing each other.  Then he went to run with a few other people, so I had to finish up by myself.  The last .8 was rough…didn’t think I was gonna make it.  Guess that’s what happens when your last 9 mile run was like 5 or 6 weeks ago, and you’ve been running inconsistently since.  But, I made it through and am glad I did.

Today I went back to that park by my house to see if I couldn’t run it a lot better than I did last time.  This time I memorized the map before I left so I knew where to go.  Luckily today was a little cooler, and a lot less humid.  It turned out to be an amazing run…one of those runs where your legs just keep truckin and truckin, stayin quick and feeling good.  I left the garmin at home…just went old school and brought my Timex watch.  Feels good to stay simple sometimes.  I still find it amazing that I was out there for over 40 minutes, on multiple trails, and there was NO one else out there running…it’s such a great place to run!  Ahh well, my secret then.

Well, time for me to knock out soon.  Keep it strong, and run on friends!

Back in Achin!

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

No workout, no running.  My back has been killing me since I started physical therapy.  Like, I never had pain in my back like this before.  I’m gonna give it another session or two, but if the pain doesn’t clear up then I’m going to stop going.  I was fine for the most part before I started going…at least I could run.  Now it hurts just sitting around.  Not cool, not cool at all.

So I just realized that my fundraising has kinda slumped out.  I haven’t had any new donations come in a while, and I realized I don’t really have any fundraising events (outside of the baseball game) coming up any time soon.  I really need to get on the ball.  Its definitely more tough this time around, since the economy is the way it is.  I mean, trust me, I know it is tough…I’m struggling somewhat myself.  But hopefully either we’ll have a quick turn around, or people will be able to find that little extra to pass along to help others who need it.  If you’re interested in donating, please use the “donate now” button located on the right side of the screen to make your tax-free donation.  It will be greatly appreciated!

Well, that’s about it for now.  Hopefully the next time I write the sun might actually be out!  Until that time…

Run on friends!

LSD at Liberty State Park

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

Workout: 7 miles + 2 “cool down” miles

Time: 59:39 + 23:00

statue-of-liberty-nyWow, I forgot how getting up on Saturday’s at 6:00 in the morning for these weekend Team in Training runs is so brutal.  But I guess it is worth it to try to beat some of the heat.  So today’s run was at Liberty State Park.  Ran with Team in Training…well, mainly my friends Alex and Dana, but it was a Team in Training run.  The first 2 miles were into the wind…not that fun….but it gives you the view of the Statue of Liberty and the NYC skyline.  Then the rest of the run was spent speeding a long at a not “LSD” pace.  I felt really good throughout…glad I went.  Then after my 7 one of my Teammates still needed to do 2 to get to 7, so I went back out with him and finished up with him.

Overall right now I’m feeling pretty good about my running.  I feel pretty strong, pretty steady.  I mean, yes, there’s ups and downs along the way, and I do have a few nagging things going on, but overall I have (at least at this point) high hopes for my next half I race…whether I decide to actually race Virginia Beach, or just run that with my girlfriend and race the Philly Distance a few weeks later.  Philly Distance is supposed to be a very flat, very fast course…so it’s tempting, but it’s also 2 days after my friend’s wedding, so I’m worried I might be exhausted from that.  Still making up my mind on that.

Well, I’m outta here.  Got some stuff to do, then maybe nap it up a little.  Have a great weekend everyone!

Run on friends!
