I couldn't agree more... sometimes things happen unexpectedly and you can't run that race... despite all the miles logged, and all the time spent... your health is the most important thing and although running is amazing, its not worth risking it when you are not 100% going into a race. You and I are in the same boat for 2010, and frankly, I think it will be more enjoyable this way. See you on the trails!

Oh, yes, Saturday was cold! My husband and I did the PHUNT 50k that day. We lucked out b/c most of that run was in the trails, so we were somewhat blocked from the wind (although we still got it at times). I had 5 layers on my top that day!

I heartily agree a good hat that covers your ears is a necessity. Windbreaker a must. Gloves - hands, head & feet really play a significant role in the body temp.

No doubt that hot chocolate tasted GOOD - and a great recovery drink :) Nice work!

What a nasty experience. I'm glad you had a friend with you...would hate to think of what may have happened if you didn't have someone with you.

Running in this weather is not for the sane I tell you...but we do it just the same (I, however, would never be brave enough to undertake your challenge!). Wearing a hat is crucial this winter in NJ (so much colder than last year). I will also admit that I invested in thermal running gear (love them like I can't begin to describe). It's made my runs in Toronto Canada over the holidays and these last few days more than doable for me.

Keep training both indoors and out and yes, do keep warm. Best! :)

[...] I don’t know about you, but I find Fall to be THE best season for running. Well, actually, I think it’s the best season over all, but for running it definitely is amazing. The weather is cool but not cold, the days are still long enough to have sunshine to run in after work, and the trees turn amazing colors, giving each run a beautiful setting. Fall just reminds me of Cross Country season in high school, where I first fell in love with running. Each year this time comes around and I just fall in love all over again. Cheesy, I know, but it’s the truth. And, I’m getting married next fall! We picked a date of September 25, 2010. You can check out our wedding web page here…be sure to sign the guest book! And just so you don’t think I’m completely cheesy, Fall is also the time for football!!!
Sorry the 2nd half the race went bad but it sounds like you were on goal pace till the 6 mile mark. We'll get you prep'd for the ultra. Rest up. You'll need it.
