Team in Training Updates

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

Man oh man, life sometimes gets busy and hectic…and sometimes I just get lazy.  Put those two together, and you can see why I haven’t blogged in a few days.  First things first…I didn’t run for 3 days (Sun, Mon, Tues)…SHAME on me.

Good reasons?  Yes.  Monday was the fundraiser for Team in Training at the Somerset Patriots ball park.  We managed to raise $375 that night from selling 50/50s, and overall from the event (selling prior 50/50s and tickets) we probably raised over $1000.  Not bad, not bad at all.

rocknroll

And Tuesday’s excuse?  Team in Training Send Off for the Virginia Beach Rock N Roll Half Marathon I’m running in two weeks with my girlfriend (now of 1 year…happy anniversary!).  Really looking forward to the race, should be a good time.   So let me catch you up on the other runs…

Day: Saturday

Workout: 12 Miles

Time: 1:53ish

Weekends have NOT been friendly to waking up at 5:00 am these past few weeks.  It always seems to be rainy out.  But this time I pushed through it and actually went to the run.  It rained most of the run…not hard, but it was still wet.  Parts of the trail were flooded, so we had to make some detours, but overall it was a good run.  Prior to this 12 I had only run a 9 miler this training cycle…so the last 3 were a little though.  At 9.5 my stomach was very unhappy, and at 10-12 I ran/walked the rest.  Not my best workout, but time wise it was still pretty good.  I’ll be in good shape for Virginia Beach, then I can still get a few quality long runs in before the ING Hartford Half in October.

Day: Wednesday

Workout: 3 miles

Ran an easy 3 miles with my girlfriend.  About 0.8 miles in my Garmin went in…luckily shortly after that her Garmin finally found a signal and kicked in.  We ran a somewhat hilly course…not too hard, but not flat and easy either.  I was really impressed with her running.  She keeps getting better.  I’m trying to convince her to run a marathon…she’s slowly swaying in that direction, but she doesn’t like running in the cold and training would mostly be throughout the winter, so we’ll see how that goes.  In any case, I think she’s ready to PR at Virginia Beach, assuming good weather and no injuries.

Well, that’s it for right now.  I’m going to try to post after tonight’s run too.  Until then…Run on Friends!

Swamp Chest

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Workout: 3 miles

Weather: HOT and HUMID

So, if you are a runner, or someone who works out, or maybe just have some general knowledge, you are familiar with the term swamp butt.  Yes, I know, it’s nasty to think about it, but we’ve all had it at one time or another…usually on long hot runs…or if you’re unfortunate, just sitting around watching TV.  In any case, you know what it is.  Well, on really hot and humid days when I run I seem to suffer from swamp chest.  Specifically, right in the middle of my chest.  My shirt just gets drenched in that location…combo of sweat from my chest, my neck, my face…all over…all dripping and pooling right there.  It’s a really uncomfortable feeling.  More often than not when it is hot out I’ll run without a shirt on, so it’s not a problem, but I haven’t been eating right lately so I’ve been feeling a little…bulky.  So I decided to cover it up.

Running ShoesOtherwise the run was good.  I finally got to run in my new running shoes.  See a difference between the old and new?  No, you probably can’t.  Same brand, same color scheme.  Because I spray my running shoes with shoe protector / waterproofer before I first use them, they stay really clean.  It’s just the tread that wears away.   But sliding those new shoes on was a pretty awesome feeling.  It also got me to thinking about all the running shoes I’ll be sliding on while I’m doing my training for this ultra marathon.  Really looking forward to that.

Well, that’s about it for today.  I hope you all enjoy the new site layout and pictures…I’d love to hear back from you all on it.  So, until next time, run on friends!

100 Miles – Are you Crazy?

Monday, June 15th, 2009

Workout: Easy Run

Distance: 3.1 miles

Today I found myself in Hoboken doing my run again, as my bathroom is currently being remodeled so I have no where to shower.  Run was good.  A thunderstorm had just passed by, so the air was clear and crisp and the NYC skyline was completely clear.  I ran the same course I did last week, and again with my girlfriend.  It’s good getting to run with her, because it keeps me at an easy pace…plus, each time we run together I see her getting better and better.  I look forward to her doing well at Virginia Beach.  She keeps this up she should be able to reach her PR.

I’m also looking forward to hitting a PR, because once I do I’m going to take a step back from running for speed and switch over to running for distance.  My friends and family think I’m crazy, but I want to run a 100 mile ultra marathon.  2 years ago I read about the Western States 100 in Runner’s World magazine, and I fell in love.  100 miles of trail running…what could be better than that?  I check the 2007 finisher times…the winner finished in like 16 hours, the last person came in around 27 hours.  I can’t wait!!

Well, I’m exhausted so I gotta get outta here.  Hope your running and lives are going well!  Thanks for reading!
