The Rains Came Down

Workout: 6.55 Miles

Time: 59:33 (9:00, 9:02, 9:11, 9:04, 9:01, 9:01, 5:10)

I love running.  Let’s just start with that.  But today was one of those days I just didn’t feel like running.  Well, let me rephrase that…I was indifferent about it.  The problem was that by around noon today I was tired…and that tiredness stuck with me throughout the rest of the day.  Like…put my head and fall asleep at work tired.  So running wasn’t really on the mind.  Getting home and crawling into bed was.  Dropping the work clothes, putting on some sweats, and just knocking out.  Yes, that woulda been nice.

But that didn’t happen.  Somehow my body fell into it’s rhythm of throwing on running clothes and heading out the door.  So that’s what happened.  Today was the first day I needed to layer up a little.  I still wore shorts, but I wore a long sleeve running shirt with a short sleeve one over it.   Also wore gloves.  When I headed out the door, it was 50 degrees and cloudy.  The run started off well enough, although my right calf is still bothering me some.  At around 4 miles, it started to get a bit misty.  I had no idea it was supposed to rain.  Misty turned into rain.  Rain turned into pouring drenching wind blown rain.  It was like running through a cold hurricane, getting smacked in the face with leaves and rain from all different directions.  And then, just like that, it was over.  The rest of the run was dry, minus the puddles.

So…another day of rest ahead of me before my 2nd double up weekend…16 on Saturday, 10 on Sunday.  Fun fun stuff.  So, everyone, thanks for checkin in, and don’t forget to run on!

Time to Vent

Workout: Run How I Feel

Distance: 1/4 mile

Blah!!!  Where do I start, where do I start?  Let’s start way back in time, when I was a child and can remember a time it did not rain in New Jersey.   EVERY…SINGLE…DAY!!!  I swear it’s been raining for weeks now.  When will this madness end?  It’s really not that fun waking up every morning, looking out your window, and seeing dark clouds and rain coming down.  It’s even been cool enough to wear a jacket.  It’s June!  Warm up and clear up already!

Well, now that I’ve vented about that, let me vent about my run a little.  ”Run”…ha.  Let’s say a short jog and then a walk.  1/4 mile distance up there is being generous…I didn’t get half way down the block.  My back is killing me.  I had physical “therapy” last night, where the physical therapist proceeded to poke, prod, and twist me to see what hurt the most.  Why does he hate me?  So yeah, within running more than a few feet my lower back really hurt…to the point I needed to stop because I was afraid I’d be doing damage if I kept going.  Tomorrow is more “therapy”, so we’ll see how that goes.  Haven’t run since Monday, and it’s driving me insane.

Today was a day for venting, as work had me very aggrevated.  So I vented there, and I vented here.  Thanks for listening!  Until next time…

100 Miles – Are you Crazy?

Workout: Easy Run

Distance: 3.1 miles

Today I found myself in Hoboken doing my run again, as my bathroom is currently being remodeled so I have no where to shower.  Run was good.  A thunderstorm had just passed by, so the air was clear and crisp and the NYC skyline was completely clear.  I ran the same course I did last week, and again with my girlfriend.  It’s good getting to run with her, because it keeps me at an easy pace…plus, each time we run together I see her getting better and better.  I look forward to her doing well at Virginia Beach.  She keeps this up she should be able to reach her PR.

I’m also looking forward to hitting a PR, because once I do I’m going to take a step back from running for speed and switch over to running for distance.  My friends and family think I’m crazy, but I want to run a 100 mile ultra marathon.  2 years ago I read about the Western States 100 in Runner’s World magazine, and I fell in love.  100 miles of trail running…what could be better than that?  I check the 2007 finisher times…the winner finished in like 16 hours, the last person came in around 27 hours.  I can’t wait!!

Well, I’m exhausted so I gotta get outta here.  Hope your running and lives are going well!  Thanks for reading!

Staying Out of the Rain

Workout: Cancelled

Reason: Rain

Post Rain Run - 2000 - MSU

Post Rain Run - 2000 - MSU

There was a time when no matter rain or snow or sleet or hail or heat or cold, I’d be out there running.  I was a regular mail man.  And then, well, then I stopped running for a while, and I guess you could say I got weak.  Don’t get me wrong, if it were the middle of the summer and it was raining, I’d probably still go out running.  Or, if it were the middle of the winter and snowing, I’d probably go out running too.  It’s just these days that are in the 50’s and rainy…they are just not motivational to run in.  And so, instead of running, I took care of some things I needed to do at home.

In all honesty, I miss running in the extremes.  I’ve run in hurricane like conditions, wind slapping the rain against my face.  I’ve run in blizzard like conditions, a foot of snow on the ground (and still falling), cars not even on the road.  98 degree heat on the Jersey Shore boardwalk  in the summer.  Still frosty coldness, 20 degrees and 7 in the morning.  I specifically like (and I’m sure I’ll get into it in another post) trail running through the mud and brush…the sloppier the better.

So, no run today, and I’ll be in CT tomorrow into Sunday, so it probably won’t be till Sunday afternoon that I get a chance to run.  Hopefully the weather will be normal so I can get a long run in.  Feel like I haven’t had one in too long.  So, until then…
