Run Break: 100/200 Challenges Revisited

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

So…no run today.  I know running is supposed to be very therapeutic, but sometimes I just have a day at work where all I want to do is come home, lay on the couch, watch some mindless television (or not), and just unwind.  Today was one of those days.  So I did just that…came home, laid out on the couch, and relaxed until my stomach told me it was time to eat.  Ding!

So months ago I started the 100 pushup challenge and 200 situp challenge.  I got to the beginning of week 6 of the 6 week program, and then, well, things just fell off.  There were spurts here and there of actually doing them, but all in all its been a long while since I’ve actually done either.  So I thought, it’s about time to get started all over again.  Last time I started at week 3, so I’ll probably do the same this time.  I’ve been trying for the past 2 days to get started, but I kept getting side tracked by the desire to sleep.  So tonight,  I’m making a vow to do both the 100 pushup and 200 sit up challenge.  Hopefully I don’t get side tracked.

Nothing else really going on, but tomorrow’s gonna be in the 70s again so it should make for a good run.  We shall see….tune in next time and run on friends!

Let’s Make it a Week

Monday, July 13th, 2009

Workout: 4 miles

Time: 34:23

My goal this week?  Actually run more than once!  I remember those days…where I’d actually run more than once a week.  Ha!  Hopefully this week will restart that trend.  Today’s run was just to get out there and run.  It was kinda hot, and my legs were still heavy from the race on Saturday (more on that in a minute).  But, I got in what I wanted to get in.  And if I’m feeling very ambitious, I might even do the 200 sit-up challenge tonight!

belmar5So Saturday was the Belmar 5.  It was a race morning decision to try to run it for some speed…wasn’t sure what I wanted to do.  I had run like 3-4 times over the previous 3 weeks…but I still felt like trying it out.  Miles 1 and 2 were good…7:52 and 7:45.  Then, well, the heat kicked in…and man was it hot.  The last 3 miles got progressively slower, with the last mile clocking in at 8:58.  Finished 42 minutes flat.  I wanted to finish under 40, around the pace I wanted to do the half marathon in, but 42 ain’t that bad.  My girlfriend also finished a few minutes over the time she wanted to finish in, but her first mile was her fastest ever!  Oh!  And I beat Governor Corzine.  It was kinda interesting seeing him there with secret service and whatnot.

Sunday my girlfriend and I finally did some fundraising.  We did some supermarket begging as I like to call it.  4 hours, raised $150 dollars.  Not too bad.  We didn’t bring chairs, so we had to stand the whole time, but it went by pretty quickly.  We had a good time.  We met a guy who him and his mother just started a non profit called Operation Bling, who provide free jewelry to patients in the oncology wards at hospitals.  It’s a pretty sweet charity.  Check it out.

Lastly, I got the tickets printed for the baseball game, so buy some!!   And buy some 50/50’s!  Money raised goes to LLS!

Well, I think that’s it for now.  Hopefully tomorrow will bring another run!  Hope all you are running well!

Until tomorrow… Run on Friends!

Stop Yelling at Me!

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Workout: 4 miles, slow alert set at 8:45

Actual: 4 miles – 32:58 –  7:45, 7:58, 8:06, 9:06

And…he’s back.  After last weeks less than consistent workouts, I needed to start this week off with a bang.  So I set my Garmin to yell at me should I go slower than 8:45, and I was on my way.  Firt mile went well, probably would have been a little faster had I not hit traffic at the light.  Watch yelled at me as I was going up the first hill.  As I continued on the second mile, the watch yelled at my again as I ran up another hill or two.  Then mile 3…got yelled at several times…and it was getting hotter and hotter.  Not gonna lie, I stopped after 3 miles for a brief stop.  It was hot, and I was thirsty.  I walked another 2-3 times the last mile.  It was just too hot…and I was too thirsty.  I was very happy to be done…but still happy that I had a decent work out.

After stretching out, I made a quick change and headed off to the pool.  THAT was nice.  Heading to the pool here is like heading to a pool on vacation…gotta walk a little bit to get there, throw your stuff down on a chair, and walk on in to the built-in coolness.  Hung out for a little while, then headed back to the apartment.  Good workout and cooldown overall.

So hopefully the rest of the week goes as well as today did.  But we shall see.  My goal for tonight is to start up the 100 pushup and 200 situp challenge again.  Wish me luck.  Until next time…

Running Off Balance

Workout: Easy Run

Distance: 3.92 Miles

Time: 33:47

You ever have one of those runs that your whole body just feels off balance?  Like, you are an infant taking his/her first steps?  Well, my run today started out like that for about a half mile.  I figured it was going to be like that for the whole run, given that I hadn’t run in a few days.  Luckily it worked itself out and I ended up having a nice comfortable 3.92 mile run.  It was only supposed to be 3 miles, but I decided to explore a new route today so that’s what it ended up being.  Had my Garmin set again to yell at me if I went faster than 8:50…it yelled at me a lot, but I felt comfortable so I stuck with it.

My leg felt pretty good too.  I few weird twinges right under my knee cap, but I don’t think it was anything to be concerned about.  What I am slightly worried about is the doctor’s appointment I have on Thursday to go over the MRI results which said I have a slightly herniated disc in my back.  Yay!  Ok, not really yay, but I gotta stay hopeful.  Perhaps he’ll just say it’s something to monitor.  So…more details to come on that.

Well, that’s about it for today kids.   Off to do the 100 and 200 challenges before I knock out.  Tune in tomorrow for more thrilling training news.  Oh, and I posted some photos from some previous races.  Check them out!

100 – 200 Challenge

Workout: 100 Pushup, 200 Situp Challenge

So, I decided to take another day or two off from running, as my leg is still bothering me and the last couple of days my body has just been feeling…wrecked.  No other way to really explain it.  But that doesn’t mean I’m not gonna get some kinda workout in.

A month or so ago I started the 100 pushup and 200 situp challenge.  If you don’t know about them, click on the links in the last sentence to find out.  It’s basically a free, 6-week program which helps you reach the goal of doing 100 pushups and 200 situps.  Today I did week 5, day 3.  I’m in column 1 for the pushups and column 3 for the situps.  So total I did about 120 pushups and about 312 situps (crunches)….this morning.  So supposedly after next week I should be able to do 100 and 200, but we’ll see.  I think the 200 might be feasible…but I’m not so confident on the pushups.

The rest of the day we spent relaxing by the pool, then did some shopping at the Jersey Shore outlets in Tinton Falls.  Pretty nice place.  I also got ready 2 donations to send in which I received through the mail in response to my fundraising letter.  $100 total!  That puts me over $1000!!  I’m on my way.

Well, that’s about it today.  I might not check in tomorrow, as I won’t be running or exercising, and I’ve got to go get fitted for a tux for my best friends wedding.  So, enjoy your Sunday, and as always…
