Friday Workout: 2 miles at an ultra marathon pace

Saturday Workout: 9 miles, 8:45 pace

Today: over 5 miles, 42:14

So I got a little distracted this weekend, but finally got a chance to sit down and catch up on my blogging.

Friday I decided to see what a few miles at the pace I plan on running the ultramarathon at would feel.  And, just as I suspected, it felt pretty good.  I felt like I coulda just kept running and running.  My Garmin yelled at me a few times to slow down, but all in all I stayed at the pace I wanted to go, so it was a pretty good workout.

donateSaturday was the 7 am group run with Team in Training (I still need donations…please take a minute to donate now!).  We ran in Cranford through some of the parks there.  I’d say about 15 people showed up.  Turned out to be a good run.  Ran 6.5 of it with my friend Alex…we do a good job of pacing each other.  Then he went to run with a few other people, so I had to finish up by myself.  The last .8 was rough…didn’t think I was gonna make it.  Guess that’s what happens when your last 9 mile run was like 5 or 6 weeks ago, and you’ve been running inconsistently since.  But, I made it through and am glad I did.

Today I went back to that park by my house to see if I couldn’t run it a lot better than I did last time.  This time I memorized the map before I left so I knew where to go.  Luckily today was a little cooler, and a lot less humid.  It turned out to be an amazing run…one of those runs where your legs just keep truckin and truckin, stayin quick and feeling good.  I left the garmin at home…just went old school and brought my Timex watch.  Feels good to stay simple sometimes.  I still find it amazing that I was out there for over 40 minutes, on multiple trails, and there was NO one else out there running…it’s such a great place to run!  Ahh well, my secret then.

Well, time for me to knock out soon.  Keep it strong, and run on friends!

Workout: New Trail Run

Distance: 3.3 Miles

Weather: HOT and HUMID

So yeah, it was hot out today…and humid.  Definitely the type of hot and humid most normal people say “I am not running today.”  But does a man who wants to run a 100 mile race through the mountains seem like the kind of guy that has any sense to say no to running on a day like today?  No, no he doesn’t.

So I decided I wanted to find a new place to run today.  So I did some Google Mapping to see what I could find.  Turns out there is a county park with trails less than 10 minutes from where I live.  So, I hopped in the car and took off down the road.  It took me a few minutes once I got outta my car to find the entrance to the trails…there weren’t any “Hey, here’s the trails” signs any where.  But I found it, and off I went.

I love trail running.  Being out in the woods, running on dirt (and sand) trails, getting surprised by animals off the trail like deer and the occasional bear, alone with no one around for seemingly miles…it’s just amazing.  Today I saw about 5 deer…deer big enough to knock me over and kick my butt.  I got turned around a few times, but all in all I was pretty happy with the run.  It’s definitely a place I’ll return to…hopefully on a much cooler day than today was.

So yeah, that makes 3 days running this week.  The goal is to get a short run in tomorrow, than a 9 miler on Saturday.  That’ll make one solid week of running for me.  So friends, despite the weather, despite anything else going on in your life, make sure you run on!
