Fall: My Favorite Season

Workout: 4 miles

Time: 31:56 (8:01, 8:06, 7:47, 7:59)

fall-leavesI don’t know about you, but I find Fall to be THE best season for running.  Well, actually, I think it’s the best season over all, but for running it definitely is amazing.  The weather is cool but not cold, the days are still long enough to have sunshine to run in after work, and the trees turn amazing colors, giving each run a beautiful setting.  Fall just reminds me of Cross Country season in high school, where I first fell in love with running.  Each year this time comes around and I just fall in love all over again.  Cheesy, I know, but it’s the truth.  And, I’m getting married next fall!  We picked a date of September 25, 2010.  You can check out our wedding web page here…be sure to sign the guest book!  And just so you don’t think I’m completely cheesy, Fall is also the time for football!!!

So today’s run I decided to try to dial it down a bit from yesterday’s intensity.  I also decided to try to scope out a new route, so I headed in a different direction than I normally do.  Unfortunately running from my front door out into East Brunswick only affords so many opportunities, 99% of them on paved roads through either neighborhoods or shopping centers.  So I headed down through the latter and then into a neighborhood, which was full of dead-ends.  I ended up jumping up to a major road (Route 18) and heading down to the next cross street…which brought me to the turn around point for a 4 miler I usually do.  So at that point I figured I’d just run it out the same way and call it a day.  Mile 3 is mostly downhill (one uphill midway) so that accounts for the slightly faster mile.  But all in all it was a nice steady run, about 65 degrees, no breeze, setting sun, and only one stop for traffic.  Not bad at all.

So that’s it for today.  Tomorrow and Thursday are supposed to be in the 70s, so I’ll probably get some more runs in this week.  Also at SOME point need to do some painting inside before it gets too cold to keep the windows open.  Ahh…homeownership…the fun never ends.  In any case, until next time…Run on Friends!

Four in One

So…where’s Matt been?  I feel like I haven’t posted a blog in forever and a day and half.  I know you ALL were wondering…all 3 of you that read my blog.  Ha!  But in all seriousness, I’ve just been really tired this week and haven’t felt like blogging.

So what have I been up to?  Well…Tuesday I had physical therapy, and did not run.  I mean, they put me on an elliptical for 10 minutes…but that doesn’t really count for anything.  Then Wednesday, same thing…although I skipped the elliptical because I was 40 minutes late for my appointment…ooops!  But then Thursday came, glorious Thursday, and I went running with the girlfriend in Hoboken.  It was the first day of nice weather in I can’t remember how long.  As I sit here, it’s thundering and pouring outside…will the fun never stop?

So I’ve got to be honest, my heart hasn’t really been into fundraising lately.  I guess I’ve been too preoccupied with my own money issues to consider the fundraising.  I didn’t really think about it till I got a donation in the mail yesterday.  Which, by the way, was mailed the wrong address because in my infinite wisdom I put the wrong zip code on my fundraising letter.  Smart Matt, real smart.  So who knows, there could be a $1000 check floating around out there, and I’d never get it.

Well, that’s it for now.  I’m off to CT for the weekend for a wedding, so I don’t know if I’ll get a run in.  But I hope to get fully back on track on Monday.  So enjoy your weekend, and until next time…

Stressful Weekend

Workout: Long Run

Time: Hour +

So I started off the weekend being a witness for some paperwork for my best friend’s wedding.  That done, my girlfriend and I headed up to CT for her college reunion.  We got there kinda early, so we got our tickets and then headed to the hotel to hang some.  Some time later we decided to get our run in, so we strapped our Garmins on and headed out the door to explore the surrounding area.  Problem being that our  Garmins took FOREVER to find the satellites.  Eventually her’s got it, so we just headed out.  Mine found them about a half mile later, so we were both good to go.  We ended up doing a somewhat hilly run through the neighborhoods surrounding the hotel.  Other than the starting and finishing destinations, felt like running in Jersey.  But it was a good time.

A little later while lounging at the pool I got a call from my brother who’s in Lake Tahoe doing a Century Ride for Team in Training.  Thinking that’s why he was calling, I picked up and asked how he was doing.  Turns out that wasn’t why he was calling.  My father had had a heart attack, and was on his way to the hospital.  So, I ran up to my hotel room, packed up, and headed back to Jersey.  2 hours and many phone calls later, I was at the hospital, to find that he had had surgery and was in the CCU recovering.  Turns out one of the stints in on of his bypasses (he had a 5 bypass surgery two year ago) had collapsed, so they put a new one in.  He’ll be in the hospital for a few more days, but he should be ok.  So, if you pray, please pray for his speedy recovery.

I have a crazy, crazy family, but one thing I can say about them is that during times of need we all come together to be there for each other.  And there are a lot of us.  We may fight and disagree at other times, but when push comes to shove, we’re always there for each other.  For that I am very grateful.  And I am also grateful for my girlfriend, who was completely understanding and was there for me, even though we had to miss her reunion.  She’s the best.

So, yeah, that was the weekend.  I got some rest in today, and saw my dad again, but am looking forward to sleep tonight and hopefully a good run tomorrow.  So until the next one…

Workout: Day of Rest

So today’s blog has nothing to do with running whatsoever, so I’ll keep it short.  I went today to get fitted for my tux for my best friend’s wedding.  Black tuxes with blue vests/ties.  They’re gonna look awesome.  The girls have matching blue dresses.  We are going to be one good looking bridal party.

Yesterday I put the decal on my car for the mattruns4funds website.  Hopefully people will see it and visit the site!  I could definitely use the traffic and donations!  Speaking of donations, I got another one yesterday, so once I send the checks in that I’ve got I’ll have about $1100.  Good deal.  In case you didn’t know, I’m also doing a fundraising event at the Somerset Patriots ballpark in Bridgewater, NJ.  Details can be found in this flier.  The 50/50’s can only be purchased if you live in NJ, as different states have different rules about 50/50s…but you can still buy tickets to the game and then buy 50/50s while you are there!  Or…you can just make a donation by clicking on the “donate now” button on the right.

That’s it for today…about to go watch that Benjamin Button movie.  Back to the daily grind tomorrow.
